La Rioja
The Ebro River basin has been an ideal habitat for grapevines since pre-Roman times. Rioja wines were first recognized in official documents in 1102, and exports to Europe flourished over the next several centuries. Visits in the Upper Rioja could include Fuenmayor, a historic wine-making center with a lovely old quarter; Cenicero, with several ancient bodegas; Briones, a perfectly preserved Renaissance town and Ollauri, home to, "the Sistine chapel of the Rioja".
